CASI's purpose is to link American and Indian academics, policymakers and professionals through interdisciplinary and collaborative programs focused on aspects of modern India. Cooperation between departments, professional schools and research centers at Penn, other universities in the United States and comparable institutions in India are facilitating joint research in broad fields of inquiry. These include international security, economic development, governance in multicultural societies, global communications, energy and the environment. CASI was officially inaugurated at Penn on June, 1992, with the help of grants from the Ford Foundation and the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India.
