1. Fotoğraf Disiplininde Sokak Fotoğrafçılığı Kavramının Ayrımı ve Algılanması

Abstract:
Bu çalışmanın amacında öncelikle, fotoğraf sanatının evrimini anlamaya yönelik bir temel oluşturma hedeflenmektedir. Ayrıca, fotoğrafın gücünü ve etkisini açıklamaya çalışmaktadır. Ardından, sokak fotoğrafçılığı ve belgesel fotoğraf arasındaki farklar saptanarak tanıklık işlevinin nasıl kullanıldığının daha iyi kavramasına yardımcı olmayı hedeflemektedir. Sokak fotoğrafçılığına daha yakından ve ayrıntılı bakarak, okuyucuların bu konu hakkında daha geniş bir geniş bir perspektif kazanmaları amaçlanmaktadır. Yöntem olarak; araştırmaya sokak fotoğrafçılığı konusunu anlamak ve analiz etmek amacıyla kapsamlı bir literatür taramasıyla başlanmıştır. Araştırmanın temel argümanlarını desteklemek amacıyla örneklem oluşturulmuş ve fotoğrafçıların eserleri, deneyimleri ve yaklaşımlarına yer verilmiştir. Yarı yapılandırılmış mülâkat aracılığıyla sokak fotoğrafçısının içgörülerine ulaşılmaya çalışılmıştır. Tüm verilerin değerlendirilmesi üzerinden yürütülen bu çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden betimleyici analiz yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Sokak fotoğrafçılığının günümüzde sanat ve görsel iletişim kültürü içindeki önemi artmış olsa da bu alanın belgesel fotoğrafçılıkla sürekli olarak karıştırılması, internet üzerinde yanıltıcı ve sığ yaklaşımlarla sıklıkla çevrelenmesi, her iki disiplinin özgün niteliklerinin göz ardı edilmesine ve sokak fotoğrafı kavramının özünün ve niteliğinin gölgelenmesine sebep olmaktadır. Fotoğrafçıların yaşamı ve çalışmalarının elealınmasıyla farklı perspektifler ortaya koyulmuştur. Sokak fotoğrafçılığı etrafında etkileşim ve öğrenme fırsatlarını artırmak amacıyla festivaller, bienaller, trienaller, atölyeler, konferanslar, paneller ve seminerler düzenlenerek bu alandaki bilgi paylaşımı artırılabilir. Böylece sokak fotoğrafçılığı Türkiye’de daha geniş kitlelere tanıtılabilir, geliştirilebilir ve bu alandaki yetenekler keşfedilebilir. Sonuç olarak, bu araştırma sokak fotoğrafçılığının temel konseptlerini ve önemini ele alarak, bu özel fotoğraf türünün Türkiye’deki sınırlı bilgi kaynağına ve sağlıklı tetkiklerin bulunmadığına değinmiş ve gelecekteki potansiyelini vurgulayarak daha fazla araştırmanın gerekliliğini göstermiştir. Bu durum aynı zamanda bu alana yeni başlayan fotoğrafçılar için de bilgi eksikliğini ortadan kaldıracaktır.

Abstract:
Literary studies in America are in a late stage of decay. For nearly a century English departments have been a revolving door of influences, most of which have not been salutary. In rapid succession historical and philological scholarship of the early twentieth century gave way to the New Criticism, the critical influences of Marx and Freud, postmodernism (deconstruction), New Historicism, and the currently dominant hermeneutics of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation. University English departments today are divided along these various ideological lines, with the result that literary studies have morphed into a heterogeneous set of subdisciplines with the word “studies” appended. Here I intend no polemic against or diagnosis of the chaotic state of literature as a discipline; rather, I propose considering this state of affairs from the point of view of its practitioners. The professoriate is defined by those who profess. Borrowing Gerald Graff’s phrase, one might ask who stands out as a model of “professing literature” amidst this disciplinary chaos?

3. An Overview of German New Economic Sociology and the Contribution of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies

Abstract:
New economic sociology (NES) in Germany has many similarities with economic sociology in the United States in its conscious efforts to institutionalize its presence within the broader sociology community, its promotion of a canon via handbooks, and its focus on the sociology of markets. At the same time, it differs in its stronger connections to the German classics, the greater vitality of a macrosociological tradition in Germany, the prior existence of a “bridging” generation of economic sociologists, and its later consolidation in a period of neo-liberal globalization, all of which have given NES in the German-speaking world a distinctive character. In addition, it has been influenced by successive waves of French economic sociology – Bourdieu, convention, and actor-network theory – and its bilingual academic tradition has ensured its integration into English-speaking NES. In its contribution to the sociology of markets, the fact that NES emerged later in Germany than in the US led to a greater concern with quality markets rather than commodity markets, and a concomitantly greater attention to issues of value and price. These latter themes, in their turn, establish a continuity with German economic sociology’s enduring concern with understanding the role of money. Not surprisingly, therefore, German NES is now making key contributions to discussions on the sociology of money and is increasingly situating its analysis within the broader dynamic of capitalism and current processes of financialization.

4. Would 100 Global Workshops on Theory Building Make A Difference?

Abstract:
The paper rests on the assumption that theoretical knowledge is valuable. However, such an assumption cannot be taken for granted. Indeed the first objective is to examine the comparative advantages of theoretical knowledge. Second, if 100 theory building workshops would make a difference, what exactly would the difference be? After all, movie production is said to be dominated by Hollywood but Bollywood produces more movies than Hollywood. Nonetheless, the world market is dominated by Hollywood. Hence, if a distinction between academic domestic and global markets is applied, theory building for a number of domestic or regional markets might impact ‘consumption’ patterns in domestic or regional markets but not necessarily the world market. Moreover, the apparent need for 100 workshops rests on the assumption that the IR discipline is under American hegemony but this assumption is severely challenged by empirical research showing that American hegemony remains a fact in institutional terms but not in terms of theoretical fads and debates being followed in the rest of the world. In short, intellectual global hegemony is largely a chimera. Finally, the paper argues that 100 workshops might be necessary but could turn out to be waste of time and for two reasons. While theorizing a bygone world is fine, the workshops should address contemporary issues and be future-oriented. Furthermore, the workshops should contribute to redefine the (contested) core of the discipline.
