- In March 2006 SEESAC commissioned an Education Consultant to determine the need for a school curriculum covering small arms throughout the Western Balkan countries. This was to be achieved through consultation with relevant stakeholders, a review of available literature on the subject of small arms, children and youth, and examination of evaluation reports from previous risk education projects conducted in South Eastern Europe (SEE). The final consultancy report from that process is now available.

3. Ammunition Technical Assessment of Montenegro and Disposal of Heavy Weapon System

- Abstract:
- The Government of Montenegro has demonstrated a firm commitment to resolve their conventional ammunition problems, but lack the resources to do so. Therefore they requested assistance from UNDP Podgorica for an assessment of the ammunition stockpile management and demilitarization situation within Montenegro. As a result of this request, SEESAC undertook an Ammunition Technical Assessment (ATA), (in partnership with an independent consultant), of Montenegro during January and February 2007, and the results will be briefed to interested stakeholders at the EUCOM South East European Clearinghouse Working Group meeting in Podgorica on 14 March 2007. The Government of Montenegro will then determine 'next steps'

4. Weapons Registration and Stockpile Management Software

- Abstract:
- In May 2007 the Weapons Registration and Stockpile Management (WRSM) software application became fully operational in the Macedonian Ministry of Interior. The WRSM software is a complete solution for registration and licensing of all types of civilian weapons and their stockpile management. The software architecture contains two components: a core block containing the main processes and a customizable part to reflect the national legislation. This allows for the deployment of the software in many countries after customizing it to relevant legislation.

5. Contribution to 'Targeting Ammunition' Publication

- The Geneva based Small Arms Survey has recently released a publication that addresses the issue of ammunition within the SALW policy and operational frameworks. 'Targeting Ammunition' is a collaborative project, led and project managed by the Small Arms Survey, with contributions from Viva Rio (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Centre for International Cooperation and Security (CICS) (Bradford University, UK), Groupe de Recherche et d'Information su la Paix et la securite (GRIP) (Brussels, Belgium) and SEESAC.

- Abstract:
- A range of writers and observers have monitored the increase in private security provision across the world during the last decade. Increasingly, the private security industry is taking on roles that have traditionally been the preserve of state security providers, including: escorting and transporting high-risk commodities; providing rapid response services attached to alarm systems; stewarding large public events; operating prisons; securing courts; providing surveillance services, risk analysis and providing protective security to a wide range of facilities such as banks, ports and embassies.

7. SALW Survey of Kosovo

- Abstract:
- The London based Arms Control NGO Saferworld has been conducting a comprehensive survey of the SALW situation in the Entity of Kosovo over the last six months. The survey was based on the SALW Survey Protocols, and was researched jointly with the Pristina based NGO Forum for Civic Initiatives (FIQ). A consultation process began in April 2006 allowing officials of the Kosovo Provisional Institutions of Self Government (PISG) and United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) to review and contribute to research findings. The comments received as a result of these processes are reflected in the relevant sections of the Survey and in an accompanying recommendations document.

- SEESAC has a responsibility within its mandate to gather and disseminate information on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) in order to support SALW control initiatives within South Eastern and Eastern Europe. In May 2003 SEESAC agreed to develop a framework and then take responsibility for the future development of regional micro-disarmament standards and guidelines (RMDS/G), which would be designed to support SALW control work at the operational level. The RMDS/G reflect the development of operational procedures, practices, and norms that have been applied over the past several years in the area of SALW control.

- In November 2001 the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe adopted a Regional Implementation Plan on Combating the Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons1 in South Eastern Europe, which provides a framework of approaches and measures to tackle SALW issues that can be adopted by the countries of the region and supported by international organisations and bi-lateral donors. The Implementation Plan included provision for the establishment of a regional clearinghouse to support its implementation, and on the basis of this mandate SEESAC was officially launched in Belgrade on the 08 May 2002 as a joint UNDP and Stability Pact initiative.
