Abstract:
America encompasses a rich diversity of faith traditions, and “religious churning” is very common. In 2023, PRRI surveyed more than 5,600 adults across the United States about their experiences with religion. This report examines how well major faith traditions retain their members, the reasons people disaffiliate, and the reasons people attend religious services. Additionally, this report considers how atheists and agnostics differ from those who say they are “nothing in particular.” Finally, it analyzes the prevalence of charismatic elements as well as prophecy and prosperity theology in American churches and the role of charismatic Christianity in today’s Republican Party.

For American Christians, debates about national security involve a complex relationship between their faith, the role of their own country in a state-centered world order, and the ills and dangers of that world. Americans hold different ideas about the causes of war and the degree of external threat posed to their country, but in the public discussion the question of what Christian ethics requires of the United States has largely been ignored. Paul Miller and Michael C. Desch both seek to connect American foreign policy to higher ideals, with vastly divergent conclusions. American anxieties about intolerance, misogyny, and tyranny are projected onto Islam are part of the broader history of European’s use of Islam as a foil in Western liberalism. Professor Massad presents a rich historical record of Christian and liberal discourses aimed at curing Muslims of their supposed illiberal ways. At a time when Muslims and Islam are frequently misrepresented in the media and public discourse, Islam in Liberalism offers a timely and insightful historical context of current events. Joseph Massad is a full professor at Columbia University where he teaches and writes about modern Arab politics and intellectual history.
