1. Notice and Takedown in Everyday Practice

Abstract:
It has been nearly twenty years since section 512 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act established the so-called notice and takedown process. Despite its importance to copyright holders, online service providers, and Internet speakers, very little empirical research has been done on how effective section 512 is for addressing copyright infringement, spurring online service provider development, or providing due process for notice targets. This report includes three studies that draw back the curtain on notice and takedown: 1. using detailed surveys and interviews with more than three dozen respondents, the first study gathers information on how online service providers and rightsholders experience and practice notice and takedown on a day-to-day basis; 2. the second study examines a random sample from over 100 million notices generated during a six-month period to see who is sending notices, why, and whether they are valid takedown requests; and 3. the third study looks specifically at a subset of those notices that were sent to Google Image Search.

Action Agenda for Historic Preservation in Legacy Cities" is a report containing a nine-point strategy to shape new approaches to preservation, to adapt existing tools and policies used by preservationists, and to promote place-based collaboration, especially in legacy cities like Newark, Detroit, and Cleveland. The global knowledge economy favors cities because their density and infrastructure support the knowledge spillovers and innovation that flow from concentrated economic activity. Increasing demand for energy efficiency, too, favors the proximity and walkability found in cities' dense urban development patterns. Perhaps most importantly, cities continue to offer a unique opportunity for living well together in dense, dynamic communities where diversity and democracy flourish. In the United States people continue to move to metropolitan areas and before the Great Recession were increasingly returning to central cities, a trend expected to continue as the economy rebounds.

Abstract:
Never, in its lengthy history, has the accounting profession been required to deal with the kinds of challenges that it must confront today. A seemingly unending series of sensational accounting scandals has grabbed newspaper headlines over the last three years, eroding public confidence in the accounting profession and leading to the most sweeping amendments to United States securities law since the Securities Act was passed by Congress in 1934. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, as well as the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) established as a result of the Act, now force the profession – and all of those who rely on its services – to rethink its most fundamental principles and practices.

The report of a 2004 Assembly on the role of the arts within colleges and universities. Participants concluded that higher education institutions play a critical role in supporting the arts in general and the performing arts in particular, for which they too often provide the only venues for learning, practicing and enjoying those arts. The report calls for a range of research and stronger advocacy activities on behalf of the arts on campuses, and stronger integration of the arts into the life of campuses.
